Patients who have obtained written research consent from the individual or a surrogate

1) Patients allergic to local anesthetics
2) Patients with communication difficulties
3) Patients who have undergone spinal surgery or have infection or metastasis in the spine
4) Patients who are on anticoagulants or have abnormal coagulation capacity.

All diseases for which thoracic epidural anesthesia is indicated

The pre-procedure ultrasonography group is divided into two groups: the pre-procedure ultrasonography group and the real-time ultrasonography group. In the pre-procedure ultrasonography group, the target vertebral segment is identified before the procedure, and an epidural puncture is performed blindly as usual using the vanishing-resistance method. In the real-time ultrasound group, the epidural puncture is performed while always visualizing the needle tip. In both groups, a catheter is placed 4 cm into the epidural space. Successful catheter placement is confirmed by ultrasound in both groups.
