Prior to the start of the experimental session, each participant will perform one stress task consisting of an arithmetic task (Kraepelin test). Respiratory responses, subjective fatigue, and concentration associated with the stress task will be assessed in advance. This procedure is conducted to determine how breathing changes under a stress-loaded condition. The aim of the present study is to investigate how different methods of odor presentation affect respiratory activity and subjective relaxation responses. In particular, it has been reported that sensitivity to olfactory stimulation decreases approximately 30 seconds after odor presentation due to a phenomenon known as habituation or olfactory adaptation. Therefore, in addition to a condition in which an odor is presented continuously, the present study includes a condition in which the odor is discontinued after a brief presentation and a condition in which the odor is presented intermittently. Respiratory responses and subjective evaluations will be compared among these different temporal patterns of odor presentation. Each odor presentation condition will last 120 seconds and will be divided into 30-second intervals. The following three presentation patterns will be used: (1) an odor will be presented only during the first 30 seconds, followed by no odor presentation; (2) an odor will be presented continuously for 120 seconds; and (3) 30 seconds of odor presentation and 30 seconds without odor will be alternated. Condition (1) was designed to examine the extent to which a brief odor stimulus has a sustained effect on subsequent respiratory activity and subjective state. Condition (2) was designed to examine the effects of continuous odor presentation and to assess whether these effects diminish as a result of olfactory adaptation. Condition (3) was designed to examine whether intermittent odor presentation reduces olfactory adaptation and thereby maintains sensitivity to the odor and its relaxation-related effects. Because responses to odors may vary depending on the type of odor and individual preference, the above three presentation patterns will be performed for each of two different odors. In addition, one control condition without odor presentation will be included. This design enables comparison of the effects of odor itself, the effects of different odor presentation methods, and the influence of odor type and preference. For these reasons, the present study consists of a total of seven conditions: three presentation conditions for each of two odors, plus one no-odor control condition. Respiration will be continuously measured throughout the study. After each condition, participants will rate subjective odor intensity, odor preference, comfort, fatigue, and concentration using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Reaction times to visual and auditory stimuli will also be measured after each condition in order to examine the effects of odor presentation on attention and concentration. The order of presentation of the seven conditions for each participant will be randomized using the RAND function in Microsoft Excel. One random number will be generated using the RAND function for each condition (Conditions 1-7), and the generated random numbers will be sorted in ascending order. The resulting order will be used as the presentation sequence for that participant. After the presentation order has been determined, the random numbers will be fixed as values so that they are not recalculated by the RAND function, and the randomization table will be saved together with the participant identification number. The same procedure will be used to determine the presentation order for all participants. After completion of each condition, the next condition will be initiated only after confirming that the participant's subjective state and respiratory rate have returned to resting levels. |
