Participants will be undergraduate and graduate students aged 18 to 25 belonging to Waseda University, who have a high tendency towards irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and have consented to participate in this study of their own free will. A screening survey based on Rome IV will be conducted to measure the tendency of IBS. Individuals who report having experienced abdominal pain in the past three months will be selected as participants.
Individuals with back pain, arthritis, cancer or tumors, heart disease, immune disorders, epilepsy, mental disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), eye diseases that may be aggravated by increased intraocular pressure (e.g., glaucoma, retinal detachment, conjunctivitis), or individuals advised against physical activity by a physician will be excluded. Additionally, individuals currently receiving any form of treatment or participating in another intervention study will also be excluded.
Participants will undergo a 4-week intervention based on the Kripalu yoga sequence developed for this study. Participants in the yoga group will perform a 30-minute daily yoga program while watching an instructional video throughout the 4-week period. Considering the stages of Kripalu Yoga practice, different sequences will be used for the first two weeks (Part 1) and the last two weeks (Part 2). During the first two weeks, participants will follow a basic Kripalu Yoga sequence. In the last two weeks, they will follow a sequence with a slowed-down approach aimed at calming excessive energy. Participants in the control group will walk indoors for 30 minutes daily throughout the 4-week period.
